Tea-Tree, Eucalyptus & Orange Essential Oil - Sweeten Diesel Disaster?
What's Going On Here?
Queensland University has mixed orange, tea-tree and eucalyptus essential oil with diesel to produce a sweet-smelling biofuel blend with comparable performance to diesel-only fuel.
The advancement is set to make use of waste essential oil that is not deemed of a "therapeutic grade". Early reports suggest the biofuel blend is cleaner than pure diesel too - namaste!
What Does This Mean?
Essential oils are derived from plants and are generally used in aromatherapy, cosmetics and perfume production. Its a growing market, however as only therapeutic grade oil is used there is lots of leftover oil.
It was ALSO interesting to note that particulate emissions were lower than pure diesel, but nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were slightly higher.
Why Should We Care?
Currently diesel is getting lots of bad pollution- press... but why is this?
CO2 per mile: Diesel < PetrolNOx per mile: Petrol < DieselParticulate: Petrol < Diesel
Although diesel produces less CO2 per mile travelled, it is widely recognised that diesel produces far greater amounts of pollutants (NOx & Particulate) than petrol.
The key is to UNDERSTAND the differences as the lemon-grass may be greener on the other side! ok... that was a bit of a stretch.
Petrol based commuter? Trust us the lemongrass is greener on the other side. Get yourself a cheap 2nd hand bike and riiiiiiide! The curious.earth crew ride to work and we love it!
