Solar road, take me home! China builds its first solar motorway
What's Going On Here?
China has resurfaced a stretch of motorway with solar panels, which can be used just like a normal road, while at the same time generating renewable energy.
The manufacturers of the solar road panels are hoping this test will show that the surface is durable, efficient and a viable alternative to traditional road surfaces of asphalt and concrete.
What Does This Mean?
It’s not the first of it’s kind to be built, but because the solar road panels aren’t mass-produced, previous attempts have been hugely expensive. The first solar road was built in France and cost €5m for just one kilometer. Ouchy
Why Should We Care?
Solar panels are an incredible feat of engineering, but we can all agree that they won’t win any beauty contests. Much like wind farms, solar farms divide opinion and many people argue that they damage the beauty of the countryside.
They have me wonton more!
When it comes to eco-motorways it may be quite a while before you can whizz along a solar-powered M25, but there are other ways you can harness the sun’s energy in your daily life.
Solar lights are also a great option for illuminating your garden, they are cheap, easy to install and a good quality set will last you for years - just in time for plant-based BBQ season!
