What's Going On Here?
A company called Apeel Science has created a bio-film called EdipeelTM that can be applied to fruit and veg, post-harvest, which can double the product's lifespan - even without refrigeration. As the name suggests it's edible too!
US publication CNBC rate it too, putting the start-up in their top 50 disruptors for 2018, alongside Space X, Uber and Airbnb!
Apeel is focusing the avocado, mango, and cassava (a type of sweet potato) crops first, and are applying the coating so they can be eaten before they go yucca. (High five if you got that pun.)
Here's how it works:Edipeel > mixed with water > fruit/veg dipped in mix > water evaporates to leave coating > coating reduces water loss from veg/fruit & also reduced oxidation = BINGO - produce lasts longer!
The creates an 'optimal microclimate', which leads to improved quality on the shelf and extended freshness at home.
Why Should We Care?
UN Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimate that one-third of food produced globally for humans is lost or wasted. So if this news doesn't Apeel to you then you must be bananas!
